The First Stop: An Ancient Ocean

Take a look at the Megalodon Molars that are found in West Java, Indonesia. Twenty million years ago warmer marine habitats were prevalent in the dry zones that we have today. Megalodon sharks inhabited those prehistoric waters, along with a myriad of other types of marine life.

Similar to modern sharks, Megalodon continuously produced teeth and then lost them. Some of the teeth were buried in marine sediments. If the conditions are ideal burial may protect the teeth sufficient time to permit fossilization.

Then geology came in.

The next chapter was extremely slow. Sediments accumulated. Minerals interacted and dug up. Geological forces altered landscapes, and even environments that had were underwater later were transformed into the landscape we see today. Indonesian specimens found in West Java’s Miocene Bentang Formation are often tan, golden, brown, blue, red or black. They can even show a variety of shades on a single tooth. The surrounding minerals may alter the appearance of a fossil after it has been buried for a prolonged period of time. The result is effectively impossible to reproduce in mass quantities through nature. Each fossil tells its own geological tale.
